Although undated, the letter is believed to be from 1864 because this was the only time during the Civil War that the Troup Artillery was stationed at Raccoon Ford. The collection consists of papers relating to the Dixon family of Meriwether County, Georgia including correspondence of John L. Dixon at Collinsworth Institute, Joshua L. Render and his wife Mary Jane (Dixon) Render, and John Tillman Dixon. One letter mentions the Charleston Convention (1860). Of particular interest are three letters from John Tillman Dixon, serving with the 29th Georgia Infantry Regiment, to his sister Mary Jane, while stationed at Richmond during the Civil War. Includes an 1853 tax list for 84 enslaved people plus land, cattle, sheep, hogs, wagons, and carriage.

The collection consists of letters, written mainly by William C. Goggans and family, during the American Civil War, 1861-1865. Correspondences discuss army camp life, conditions and war news, and the wartime economy and psychology. Goggans wrote from camps in Richmond, Fredericksburg, James River, Cumberland Gap, Camp Jackson (Martinsburg), and Smithfield in Virginia; Milledgeville and Augusta, Georgia; and Meridian, Mississippi. Also contained in the collection is a letter from J. B. Walton to the General Commander, U.S. Forces at Savannah, Georgia, and Confederate civilian letters. This collection contains approximately 40 wartime letters written by the Blasingame family, including Confederate soldiers with the 54th Georgia Infantry. Civil War letters originate from the front lines in Richmond, Virginia, and Savannah, Atlanta, Fort Macon, and Marrieta, Georgia. This grouping includes a partly-printed parole for John S. Blasingame out of Macon, 1865, in which Blasingame is sworn under oath not to bear arms against the United States of America, give any information, or do any military duty whatsoever until regularly exchanged as a prisoner of war. Other materials in the collection include family correspondence from 1893-1894 and 1909 and 2 small photographs.
